Locorotondo
There is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy at the region called Murgia of Trulli. It is Locorotondo. Its historical center dates back to the tenth century when a church was built on the hill which dominate the Itria Valley, after a miracle of St. George - a protomartyr who died at Nicomedia -. The villagers began to build their white houses around the church and beside the road descended toward the valley as a spiral.

The village became known as Casale S. Giorgio
until the nineteenth century and Locorotondo in Italian because it called U Curdunne
in local dialect.
Locorotondo is reached by coming from Alberobello or Cisternino. You can see the cummerse a long way out, these typical houses have the pitched roof realized with the chiancarelle. They are typical calcareous flagstones of the Itria Valley. These natural tiles provide impermeability to houses.

The Mother Church of St. George - he was protector of the village - dominates the built-up area from above. It was completely rebuilt in the 17th century. Its 47 metre high bell tower has four corners with the Veronica and three Marie statues. They and 42 Pauperum Bible boxes (which placed in the Chapel of SS Sacramento) come from the old Mother Church Pietà.
Not to miss the Church of Santa Maria della Greca: it is the oldest church in Locorotondo and was built the first time in the 7th century. It maintains the Gothic structure and the very beautiful front on which the rose window was rebuilt after the destruction of the medieval one. Inside there are the Baroque frescoes and a mysterious statue at the bottom of the left nave, a kneeling warrior praying. According to some, it is Prince Pirro Orsini Del Balzo who restored the church in the Renaissance.

The alleys that descends from the St. George's Mother church are paved with the same stone of chiancarelle but of greater thickness.
